Order, Backlog and Sales Performance in Manufacturing

Problem & Context

A machinery manufacturer needed monthly transparency into order intake, order backlog, and revenue across its operations to support performance management and controlling. After a recent SAP migration, the available report structures no longer allowed efficient visualization in SAP, resulting in a time-consuming manual reporting process that had to be repeated every month. This created delays, limited the scope of the reports, and reduced confidence in the figures. In addition, different production sites relied on their own local reports, making consolidated analysis and cross-site comparison difficult.

Approach & Solution

The project began with a business alignment phase to confirm KPI definitions and reporting expectations together with the relevant stakeholders. From there, the work moved into data preparation in MS SQL Server, followed by visualization in Power BI. Close collaboration with the business was maintained throughout, with several rounds of quality checks to validate that the figures matched expected results. Once the reports were stable, the solution was rolled out to additional plants within the company, which required individual alignment sessions to capture and incorporate the plant-specific exceptions each site brought along.

Results & Impact

The reports replaced a manual compilation process that previously consumed 1–2 days of stakeholder time each month, delivering the same KPI views instantly and on demand. Following the initial rollout, the solution was extended to 3 additional plants up to date and became the standard monthly reporting format for order entry, backlog, and revenue.
